QSFP-DD AOC (Active Optical Cables) are conceptually two QSFP-DD optical transceivers with a fiber optic cable permanently embedded into each end (the fiber cable cannot be removed). This results in a “ready to use” cable assembly, similar to passive Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables, but with the benefit of internal active electronics to manage the host electrical interface and a longer reach, lighter weight cable.
The QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form Pluggable Double Density) transceiver form factor leverages the manufacturing capability and cost structure that supports QSFP+ and QSFP28, the industry’s standards for 40GbE and 100GbE. The QSFP-DD Specification defines a new pluggable form factor that supports 8 high speed electrical interfaces connecting to the host. It is backward compatible with all QSFP based transceivers from 40G to 200G. QSFP-DD can support 36 ports of 400GbE in a single Rack Unit (RU) providing over 14Tb/s of bandwidth.
