Applications can be as short as within a specific municipality, to as long as transoceanic connections. This requires a diverse set of technologies and protocols be brought together to form end-to-end solutions. Campus routing and interoffice switch networks serve to generate and direct telecommunications traffic using SONET, OTN and Ethernet protocols. Link distances in telecom tend to be much longer than in Enterprise, Data Center or Storage networking, with individual nodes running at 15km, 40km, 80km, 100km and beyond. The use of color, in the form of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), allows scalability of networks and maximum fiber cable utilization. Coherent technology is now being deployed for extending link distances. High reliability and long mission life are key to these networks, which are in it for the “long haul.”
