Cloud Data Center
With the emergence of internet based storage and compute services comes the concept of “Cloud”, enabling geographically diverse data centers to supply capabilities for running software and storing information that had previously only been available locally. Using Cloud compute or storage reduces an Enterprise company’s need for local capital equipment and operating expenses, by aggregating the cumulative requirements of widely spread customers into a small number of dense, high capacity and tightly managed Cloud (sometimes called “Mega-“) Data Centers. These unique facilities provide massive economies of scale to equipment suppliers and are often exceeding well managed architecturally and environmentally, with an insatiable appetite for increasing bandwidth, density and power savings. Redundancy in servers, discs and interconnects – and a 3 to 5 year “rip and replace” equipment upgrade strategy – means long term reliability goals are often relaxed.
